Patio Re-pointing Edinburgh
Loose sand joints let weeds take hold and paving start to rock underfoot. I remove the old, eroded jointing and replace it with a resin compound that locks your patio in place and puts an end to weeding - for good.
- Locks paving in place
Resin/polymeric compound cures into a semi-rigid joint that resists washout and movement.
- Stops weeds for good
No loose material left for weeds to root in - a dramatic reduction versus sand joints.

Your property is fully protected throughout the job.
Why Patio Joints Fail - And Why It's More Than Cosmetic
Every patio's jointing sand erodes over time - washed out by rain, disturbed by foot traffic, colonised by weeds. Once it's gone, the paving itself is no longer supported the way it should be. What starts as a few weeds between the slabs ends up as loose, rocking paving and standing water.
Weeds & moss in the joints
Loose or missing jointing material is exactly what weeds need to establish. Pulling them by hand only clears the surface - the roots and the gap remain.
Rocking & shifting slabs
Jointing material locks paving together. Once it erodes, individual slabs and blocks can shift and rock underfoot, especially near edges.
Trip hazards
Eroded joints and shifting paving create uneven edges and sunken slabs - a real trip risk, particularly for children and older visitors.
Water pooling
Gaps and dips left by washed-out jointing let water collect on the surface instead of draining away, accelerating further damage.
Our Patio Re-pointing Process - Step by Step
Every re-pointing job follows the same thorough sequence, so the compound bonds properly and lasts.
Inspection & assessment
I check every joint across the patio for looseness, cracking, or missing material, and identify any problem areas - shifting slabs, deep gaps, or heavy weed growth - before any work starts.
Full clean & joint rake-out
The whole surface is pressure washed, then old or eroded sand and jointing material is raked out of every joint to a consistent depth. This gives the new compound a clean, solid surface to bond to. The paving must be completely dry before the next stage.
Compound mixing
I mix a resin or polymeric jointing compound to the manufacturer's exact specification. Getting the ratio right is what determines how well the finished joint resists weather, weeds, and wear.
Application & compaction
The compound is worked fully into every joint across the patio, packed tight with no gaps or air pockets. Excess material and surface haze are cleaned off before it begins to cure, so the finish looks sharp - not smeared.
Curing & final inspection
The compound needs roughly 24-48 hours to cure fully before normal foot traffic resumes. I do a final walk-through to confirm full coverage and a clean, consistent finish across every joint.

Surfaces We Re-point in Edinburgh
Joint width, depth, and material all affect how re-pointing is done. Here's how we approach each surface type.
Block paving
Narrow, closely-spaced joints. Resin compound gives a far more stable, weed-resistant finish than the kiln-dried sand typically used on driveways.
Indian sandstone
Wider, irregular joints on riven stone. Compound is worked carefully into each gap to follow the natural, uneven edges without smearing the stone face.
Natural stone flags
Variable joint widths need careful compound depth control for a consistent look across the whole patio.
Concrete slabs
Regular, uniform joints - typically the fastest surface to re-point, with a crisp, even finish.
What Your Neighbours Are Saying
Real reviews from real customers across Edinburgh.
Michael came to my house and cleaned all of my outdoor bins. He did an amazing job, they all look brand new. He tidied everything up and even put my bins to the back of the house for me. Really nice, polite man. I would highly recommend him and will definitely use him again.
We used Michael again last week. This time to clean the many slabs round our garden with his pressure washer. He's reliable and conscientious and did a good job.
Michael has done several jobs for me, including fencing, building a shed, gardening and most recently pressure washing my patio, which looks great. He's a really friendly, communicative and professional guy, who I would highly recommend!
Michael pressure washed my patio today and did a fantastic job. Very reliable, friendly, and professional. I'll definitely be using his services again and would highly recommend him.
Patio Re-pointing FAQ
Patio re-pointing is the process of removing old, eroded jointing material from between paving slabs or blocks and replacing it with a resin or polymeric jointing compound. It locks the paving in place, stops weed growth, and gives a clean, professional finish that lasts for years.
Kiln-dried sand is loose and needs topping up periodically, especially on driveways with vehicle traffic. Resin/polymeric jointing compound cures into a semi-rigid, weatherproof joint that resists weed growth and washout far longer - ideal for patios and other pedestrian areas where a premium, low-maintenance finish is worth the extra investment.
Most domestic patios take 1-2 days: cleaning and raking out the old joints on day one, and applying and finishing the new compound once the surface is fully dry. The compound then needs roughly 24-48 hours to cure before normal foot traffic.
A properly applied resin jointing compound removes the loose material weeds need to take root in, so regrowth is dramatically reduced compared to sand joints. No jointing product makes a patio completely maintenance-free forever, but re-pointing is the most effective long-term solution available.
Block paving, Indian sandstone, natural stone flags, and concrete slabs can all be re-pointed. Each surface has slightly different joint widths and depths, which affects how the compound is applied - I assess your paving before quoting.
Pricing depends on the patio's size, joint condition, and paving type. I provide free no-obligation quotes - get in touch with a photo and rough dimensions and I'll get back to you within 24 hours.
