Why Edinburgh Driveways Get So Dirty - And Why DIY Isn't Enough

Scotland's wet climate creates the perfect conditions for moss, algae and black lichen to colonise paving surfaces. A standard garden hose does nothing against roots that anchor themselves between paving stones. Consumer pressure washers rarely hit the sustained pressure needed to shift years of compacted grime - and used incorrectly, they scatter debris and damage grouting.

Oil & fuel stains

Car oil and fuel seep into paving and bond with the surface. Professional degreasers applied before washing break the bond so the pressure washer lifts it cleanly.

Black spots & algae

Dark spots on sandstone and concrete are often lichen - a living organism with roots. Surface cleaning alone won't kill it. The right biocidal treatment does.

Loose & missing jointing sand

Over time, the sand between paving blocks erodes, allowing weeds to grow and blocks to shift. Re-sanding stabilises the surface and prevents long-term damage.

Slippery surfaces

Moss-covered driveways are a genuine slip hazard, especially in the Edinburgh wet season. A thorough clean removes the danger and keeps your entrance safe.

Our Driveway Cleaning Process - Step by Step

Every driveway job follows the same thorough sequence. No shortcuts, no cut corners.

01

Drain inspection & clearance

Before touching the surface, I check every drain in and around your driveway. Blocked drains during a high-pressure wash cause dirty water to back up and flood areas you didn't want cleaned. I clear any packed sand, leaf debris, or silt so water drains freely throughout the job.

02

Water supply check & tank setup

A professional pressure washer needs a steady, high-volume water supply. I test your garden tap before starting. If the flow rate is insufficient - which is common in parts of Edinburgh - I use a dedicated water tank filled from your tap in advance. The pressure washer connects to the tank via a suction hose, guaranteeing consistent performance throughout the clean.

03

Professional pressure washing

Using a commercial-grade surface cleaner (a spinning head attachment that keeps the spray even and prevents striping), I work systematically across the driveway. Stubborn spots - oil stains, deep-set algae - get targeted pre-treatment before the main wash. The result is a uniformly clean surface without the "tiger stripe" marks that come from a hand-held lance.

04

Kiln-dried sand jointing (48 hours later)

Pressure washing removes the old, discoloured sand from between your paving blocks. Refilling is essential - without it, blocks shift, weeds reclaim the gaps within weeks, and water pools in low spots. I return when the surface is completely dry (typically 48 hours) and sweep kiln-dried paving sand across the surface, working it into every joint. This locks your paving back in place and gives it a finished, professional look.

05

Optional: driveway sealant (2-3 days after sanding)

Once the kiln-dried sand has fully settled - usually 2-3 days - I can apply a specialist driveway sealant. The sealant forms a protective barrier that repels oil and fuel, slows moss and algae regrowth significantly, and makes your next clean far quicker and cheaper. The difference in long-term appearance is substantial. This is entirely optional, and I'll advise honestly on whether your surface type would benefit.

Driveway Types We Clean in Edinburgh

Different surfaces require different pressure settings, nozzles, and chemicals. Getting it wrong damages the paving permanently. Here's how we approach each type.

Block paving

The most common driveway in Edinburgh. High pressure works well here, but jointing sand refill is essential after every clean. We use a surface cleaner head for even results.

Indian sandstone

Porous and softer than concrete. Requires moderate pressure and a suitable stone cleaner to avoid etching. Sealing after cleaning dramatically extends the surface life.

Concrete & tarmac

Concrete handles higher pressure well and benefits most from a pre-treatment degreaser for oil stains. Tarmac requires lower pressure and a gentle approach to avoid surface damage.

Pattern imprinted concrete

The sealant on pattern imprinted concrete (PIC) can peel if cleaned incorrectly. We use lower pressure and recommend re-sealing after the clean to restore protection and colour.

Driveway Cleaning FAQ

The pressure washing itself takes 3-8 hours for a typical Edinburgh driveway, depending on size and condition. The full job - including kiln-dried sand return visit and optional sealant - spans 4-7 days total, as each stage needs time to dry before the next.

Pricing depends on driveway size, surface type, and what's included (clean only, clean + sanding, or full clean + sand + sealant). I provide free no-obligation quotes - get in touch with a photo and rough dimensions and I'll get back to you within 24 hours.

Kiln-dried sand is fine, completely dry sand used to fill the joints between paving blocks. Pressure washing always removes the old jointing sand - without replacing it, weeds establish within weeks, blocks start to shift, and water pools in dips. Refilling is strongly recommended as part of any block paving clean.

This is common - low mains pressure won't feed a commercial pressure washer properly. I carry a large water tank that we fill from your tap before starting. The pressure washer runs from the tank via a suction hose, giving consistent flow regardless of tap pressure. You don't need to do anything differently.

Not necessarily. As long as I have access to a garden tap and the driveway is clear of vehicles, I can carry out the job while you're out. We'll agree all details in advance so there are no surprises.

A sealant extends the results significantly - it repels oil and fuel, slows moss and weed regrowth, and makes the next clean faster. It's applied 2-3 days after the kiln-dried sand has settled. It's optional, and I'll give you an honest recommendation based on your driveway type and condition.

In Edinburgh's climate, once a year is ideal - typically in spring before summer entertaining season. Sealed driveways can go longer between cleans, which is another reason the sealant pays for itself over time.
